Preparing your home for an electrician visit

Published 2026-10-01. Written by the Flowstate Electrical Co team.

You have booked an electrician. Now what? A few simple steps before the visit help the job go smoothly, cut down time on site and keep disruption to your household low. None of it is complicated, and most of it takes only a few minutes.

Before the day

Describe the job clearly

When you book, explain what you need and why. If it is a fault, note when it happens and what you have already tried. If it is new work, have a clear idea of where things should go. Photos sent ahead of time help Kalani arrive with the right parts. Our guide to getting a faster quote with photos explains what to send.

Have products ready

If you are supplying light fittings, a ceiling fan, a range hood or other items, have them on site, unopened if possible, with the instructions. Check they are the right model and all the parts are there. A missing bracket can hold up a job.

Know your switchboard

Know where the switchboard and meter box are and make sure they can be reached. If the meter box is behind a locked gate or in a locked garage, arrange access.

Clearing access

Electricians need room to work safely:

  • Clear furniture and items away from where work is happening.
  • Move items away from the switchboard.
  • Clear a path to the roof access hatch if ceiling work is involved.
  • Make space under the house if access is needed there.
  • Move cars in the garage if the switchboard or work area is there.

In older homes around Warilla and Lake Heights, roof access hatches are often in hallways or wardrobes. Clearing shelves below them saves time.

Plan for the power being off

Many jobs need the power isolated for a while. Think about:

  • Working from home: save work and plan around the outage.
  • Fridges and freezers: keep the doors closed.
  • Medical equipment: let the electrician know in advance.
  • Electric gates, alarms and pool equipment: be ready to reset them.
  • Clocks and timers: expect to reset them afterwards.

Kalani will tell you when the power will go off and roughly how long for.

Pets and kids

Keep pets secured away from work areas. Dogs can get anxious about strangers and ladders, and cats love open roof hatches. Young children are naturally curious about tools and open fittings, so keeping them in another part of the house helps everyone stay safe.

On the day

  • Be home, or arrange for someone to let the electrician in.
  • Walk through the job together so nothing is missed.
  • Point out any concerns, even unrelated ones.
  • Ask questions about anything you are unsure of.

Customers often tell us Kalani was on time and tidy, and that he explained everything clearly. Kalani treats your home with care and will tell you what he is doing as he goes.

After the job

  • Test new work together before he leaves.
  • Make sure you understand how to use new switches, dimmers or smart controls.
  • Keep the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work with your home records.
  • Note anything you would like done next time.

Common jobs

Whether the visit is for new lighting, a ceiling fan, smoke alarms or a switchboard check, the same preparation applies. A bit of planning means more time on the job and less time moving boxes.
