The full details

Wiring has a working life. Cable insulation dries out, joints loosen, and circuits that were fine for a few lights and a radiogram struggle with a modern kitchen and a home office. Rewiring replaces that old cabling with new, so the house is safer and ready for the way you live in it now.

Flowstate Electrical Co rewires homes across Shellharbour, Lake Illawarra, Wollongong and the Kiama coast. Customers have told us we rewired their house during a renovation and kept them across every step. That is the standard we hold ourselves to.

When rewiring makes sense

Not every older home needs a full rewire. Sometimes a few circuits are the problem and the rest is sound. We test first and tell you honestly which situation you are in. Common reasons to rewire include:

  • Rubber or cloth insulated cable, common in homes built before the 1960s
  • Lights that flicker or power points that feel warm
  • Repeated tripping that cannot be traced to a single appliance
  • Past DIY work with mixed cable types and joints buried in walls
  • A major renovation where walls and ceilings are open anyway
  • Too few power points, leading to double adaptors and power boards everywhere

What is included

  • Testing of existing circuits to find what needs replacing
  • New cabling for lighting and power circuits
  • New power points, switches and light fittings where needed
  • Coordination with a switchboard upgrade if the board is outdated
  • Hard wired smoke alarms installed while access is open
  • Final testing and NSW compliance paperwork

How a rewire runs

Walkthrough and plan

Kalani walks through the house with you, room by room. Where do you want power points? Where does the TV go? Do you want USB outlets beside the bed or a dedicated circuit for the oven? It is much easier to get this right on paper than to add it later.

Rough in

On a renovation, rough in happens while frames are exposed. In a lived-in home we work through the roof space and under the floor where we can, which keeps patching to a minimum. In brick homes around Warilla, Oak Flats and Dapto, that often means careful chasing in a few spots rather than opening whole walls.

Fit off

Once plaster and paint are done, we come back to fit switches, power points and lights. Everything is tested before it is handed over.

Living in the house while we work

If you are staying put, we can rewire in stages so you keep power to the fridge, a bathroom and at least one living area. We tell you each morning which rooms will be off and roughly for how long, and we make sure everything is safe and switched back on before we leave each afternoon.

Working alongside builders and other trades

We also do overflow work for builders and other tradies. If you have a builder on the job, we work to their schedule and keep the site tidy. If you are running the renovation yourself, we help you work out where electrical fits in the order of trades so nobody is waiting on anyone else.

Coastal and older homes

Fibro cottages in Windang and Primbee, double brick homes in Port Kembla, and weatherboard houses up at Thirroul all bring their own access challenges. Low roof spaces, solid internal walls and old timber floors each change how cables are run. We have seen most combinations and plan around them before we start.
