Dapto is one of the biggest suburbs in the Illawarra, and it keeps growing. The established streets near Dapto Mall and the station are full of older brick and fibro homes, while the land to the west has filled with new estates over the past couple of decades. That spread means the electrical work we do in Dapto is just as varied.

Two kinds of Dapto home

Established homes. Closer to the town centre and Mullet Creek, many houses date from the 1960s to the 1980s. The common jobs here are upgrading old switchboards, adding safety switches, replacing tired light fittings and adding power points where families actually need them. If your home still has ceramic fuses, or the board is a mess of different breakers added over the years, it is worth having it checked.

Newer builds. Homes in the growing western areas generally have modern switchboards and safety switches already. The requests there are more about finishing touches the builder did not include: extra downlights, outdoor power for the alfresco, sensor lights over the garage, and ceiling fans in every bedroom.

Summer in the valley

Dapto sits back from the coast, so it misses some of the sea breeze and summer days can get properly hot. Ceiling fans are one of the most cost effective ways to stay comfortable. They move air for very little power, and in winter many models can run in reverse to push warm air down from the ceiling.

Smoke alarms for growing families

NSW requires working smoke alarms on every level of a home, and current advice favours interconnected alarms so that a fire in one part of the house sets off alarms everywhere. For a two storey Dapto home with kids upstairs, that makes a lot of sense. We install battery, hard wired and interconnected smoke alarms.

Outside the house

Dapto backyards tend to be used hard: trampolines, pools, sheds and big entertaining areas. Our outdoor and security lighting work covers sensor lights, garden lighting and outdoor power points with proper weatherproofing. If a shed or granny flat is running off an extension lead from the house, that is worth fixing too. A proper supply with its own protection is far safer than a lead across the lawn.
