The full details

Water and electricity need careful handling, and nowhere more so than around a pool. Pumps, filters, chlorinators, heaters and lights all need power, and all of it sits in a wet, chemical-rich environment that is hard on equipment. Flowstate Electrical Co installs pool and outdoor power for homes across the Illawarra, from new estates in Calderwood and Shell Cove to established backyards in Figtree and Kiama.

Customers have told us we did the power for their new pool and garden lights in one job, which is often the best way to approach it. If the trench is open anyway, it is the time to run cable for everything you might want later.

What is included

  • Dedicated circuits for pool pumps, filters, chlorinators and heat pumps
  • Weatherproof outdoor power points for the pool area, shed or pergola
  • Underground cabling in conduit at the correct depth
  • Power for outdoor kitchens, barbecues and fridges
  • Pool and garden lighting, with outdoor lighting designed alongside
  • Safety switch protection on every outdoor circuit

Signs you need it

  • You are building a new pool or spa
  • The pool pump runs from an extension lead or a power board
  • Outdoor power points are cracked, missing covers or stained with rust
  • Your safety switch trips when the pool equipment starts
  • You want power at the shed, granny flat or far end of the yard

Working with your pool builder

Pool builders handle the shell, plumbing and equipment. The electrical side is separate, and timing matters. We like to talk to your pool builder early to agree where the equipment pad sits, what each piece of equipment draws, and when the trench will be open. That way the cable goes in once, nothing needs digging up later, and the pool is ready to run when it is filled.

We also do overflow work for builders and other tradies, so we are used to slotting into someone else's schedule without holding the job up.

Equipotential bonding

Pools and spas need equipotential bonding, which connects conductive parts around the pool so they sit at the same electrical potential. It reduces the risk of a person becoming part of a circuit if something faults. Bonding has to be in place at the right stage of construction, which is another reason to involve the electrician early. The wiring rules in AS/NZS 3000 set out the requirements for pool and spa areas, including zones around the water where certain equipment cannot be placed.

Can your switchboard handle it

A pool pump, heat pump and outdoor kitchen add real load to a home. Older boards, particularly those with ceramic fuses or no spare space, may need an upgrade first. We check this at the quoting stage so it does not surprise you halfway through the build. Our guide adding a sauna or pool to an older switchboard explains what we look for.

How the job runs

Site visit

Kalani looks at the switchboard, the planned equipment location and the route for cables. We talk through future plans too, such as a heater or outdoor TV.

Rough in

Cables go in while trenches are open, bonding is completed at the right stage, and conduit is laid where future cable may be needed.

Connection and testing

Once the equipment is in place, we connect it, test every circuit and safety switch, and leave the area tidy.

Coastal conditions

Around Gerringong, Gerroa and Kiama Downs, salt air and sea breezes speed up corrosion on outdoor fittings. We use weatherproof outlets and enclosures suited to the location and mount them where they are sheltered where possible.
